Why do you wish to be a Goth?
When it comes to being a goth, the underling problem has always been, why ?, the question we often don't ask ourselves but should, are you taking on the lifestyle because of the Mystic sensuality and connection to your soul? for the depth of higher consciousness that occurs when you let yourself go to the beauty of the majestic night? are you becoming a goth because you love Vampires, or ancient lifestyle?
or are you mealy wanting to change who you are in order to shock and distance yourself from your family and the people in your life from whom you feel you are not getting enough? It is not enough to just want that, if thats the only reason you want to dress in black and paint your face, then you will find it a hollow and meaningless existence, attention-seeking is not the fundamental point of being a goth, on the contrary, the use of black and other dark colors in the wardrobe is more about the hiding of your self in the darkness around you. leaving only your spirit to speak and create light. The contrast of colors from black to red for example, should be seen as a breaking of your soul through the fabric of societies restrictions.
using the title of goth for any purpose other than self development is week, you will be looked down on my all those who truly know there path, and cast away by the people who just don't understand. sure it may be fun, dressing up and walking around talking about death and how crap life is, especially for a teenager its hard to resist the simple vehicle that being a goth provides, but you must think of the repercussions, how your choice now will affect you in the future, will it take over you and leave you with an even greater hate for life, will it drive you insane as you play a role you where never meant to take, and will the person who comes out the other side be able to have a happy and complete life there after?
If your reasons are pure you should be able to go through each day without anyone knowing who you are, dress in societies cloths and enjoy the activities of the day with your usually fervor, then at night when you are alone and you are out to impress no one, only then should you adorn yourself with the symbols of your faith. If you can do this, separate who you are from the materialistic stereotyped physical, then maybe, just maybe you will find what you are looking for, you will know that you are a goth for the right reasons, that you do it for you, and not to fit into a social group, not only that but you will maintain control over a way of life that can often take over our very souls to the point of no return.
