Once a person has experienced a layoff from a job, the first thing to do to file for unemployment insurance is to take the pink slip or,layoff slip to the local State unemployment office. The people there will take the information which usually includes an application either paper or,by computer. They will put all the information received ,and will make a decision whether you will meet the requirements to receive unemployment insurance or,if you will be refused the benefits. The requirements differ by each state. After a decision is made you will receive a notice by mail in most areas. If you are turned down for the benefit you have an appeal process to go through. This also differs depending on your residence. If you are approved you will begin receiving a check each week. Most states have a minimum, and a maximum you can receive. Also, there is a maximum amount of time one can continue to get the check.Sometimes, under certain circumstances, this period will be extended. This is usually under a government job or,by a Governors signature. To continue to receive the benefits a person must register with the State Unemployment Office, and continue to seek employment. No one is required to take a menial job that would be under the wages of what they were making before the layoff. If they refuse to look for work during this paid time by the state one could lose the payments.
