Greenhouse Gases are detrimental to our health and environment. They have been causing glaciers to melt, water to rise, and drastic weather changes. Ways to solve this problem have been explored and proposed however America has yet to draw up a clear path it will take. The government has made it clear they will not offer much support in the fight against greenhouse gases so it lies in the hands of business and home owners. Scientific Americas journalist Eberhard K. Jochem points out that there is a fast and efficient way to significantly lower greenhouse gases. He points out that energy efficient measures are the best way to go, at least in till we can develop suitable ways to run off of things like hydrogen.
This problem is present through out the world however other countries have been quicker to act and used more logical approaches to reduce Greenhouse Gases than the United States. The United states needs to follow the examples of other countries like in London England where they have things like the Swiss Re Tower. The Swiss Re Tower uses 50% less energy than a conventional office building, it uses natural ventilation and lighting systems, passive solar heating, and is constructed from materials that can easily be recycled. Or the example that Melbourne, Australia with things like the Szencord Building that has a dehumanization unit that simultaneously dries and cools office space, it also uses ceramic fuel cell supplies electricity and heat for hot water. The Szencord Building uses 70% less energy than your standard office building. Hamburg Germany also sets a good example with houses that have solar collectors on there roof. There is also Jerusalem, Israel that has apartment buildings with solar heating panels and tanks.
We also have to update our homes and office buildings with things like Compact fluorescent lights that use one fourth the energy of regular bulbs, and like new dishwashers that use one half the water as manual dish washing and booster heaters in the dishwasher heat the water so you don't have to set your household heater to high. New refrigerators use one quarter the energy as old refrigerators. Solar water heaters with non-solar back up heaters are a much needed update to modern day homes and offices, as well as thick cellulose insulation. Lcd Monitors and television screens use up to 60% less electricity than older standard monitors and televisions.
Based on the Army Core of Engineers Report on Global Warming we have no time to waste and must drastically reducing Green House Emissions and these choices are some of the best ways to do that for now. Eventually we will want to eliminate Green House Gases all together but that wont happen overnight. So for now this is one of the best ways to go, if only everyone would start to work towards an energy efficient home and work setting.
