Know more than your competitors, and present it in a clear concise manner. The thrist for knowledge is ever growing on the internet, and 'experts' are popping up everywhere. You do not need to be an MBA or PH.D to be an expert in a field, just know more than your competitors, add in some life experience and get it out there.
The first thing you must do, to show the global internet community you are an expert, is get your name out there. Suzanne Falter-Barnes has an excellent site called www.getknownnow.com which offers expert tips, newsletters, seminars and media contacts on how to get your name out there.
Setting up a blog at a reputable site is an essential tool for any would be expert. Blogging sites like www.writingup.com and www.blogger.com allow people to gain a following. Update your blog weekly so the public doesn't lose interest. Having a media profile or lens at www.squidoo.com along with your professional contact information can also boost contacts.
Next, write a book. With the ease of on-line publishing its now remarkably easy to self publish. Make sure your book contains not just facts, but opinions too. First time authors have no need to fear, 'how-to' books are the fastest growing form of information selling, and an ideal place to start is www.todaybooks.com. Here, you can download a free book template and upload your book to their site. Instant exposure without having to create a costly website to sell it!
Last but certainly not least, get interviewed! You don't need a PR person for this, simply contact on-line radio stations, and state you want to be interviewed about your book and expertise. The world will know you in no time!
