Does insomnia help or hinder creativity?

by Lupine

Did you know that Thomas Edison never slept more than a few minutes at a time? He felt that deep sleep would hinder his creativity.

In order to prevent himself from falling into deep sleeps, Edison used to lay down with quarters in his hand. As he would fall into a deep sleep the quarters would fall to the floor and wake him up.

In Edison's case the answer is clearly that insomnia greatly helped his creativity. If we think about it, what keeps us up at night with insomnia?

Isn't it worry over something or other. An active or some might say and overactive mind. Constantly thinking. Does that not lend itself to creativity?

Or does a tired mind shut down and not work properly?

Personally I will work into the wee hours on many different projects. If something is especially interesting me I don't even notice the time and before I know it I hear the car go by that drops off papers in the morning around the neighborhood. When I'm into the bit sleep will not come anyway so I just keep on working.

At other times I am just too exhausted to think anymore and then I can sleep.

So I would have to say that insomnia helps creativity at times and hinders it at others.
