Being a lawyer is great. At the most basic, it is a noble calling that ranks right up there with priest, teacher and doctor. Being a lawyer really is a life of service. Helping someone who has a legitimate problem is a great feeling.

However, life is not lived in a vacuum nor it is easy. In the real world, lawyering is hard. The rewards can be bountiful, but, there are so many pitfalls and traps that it is hard to keep your eye on the prize, so to speak.

I became a lawyer for two reasons. I believe that most lawyers have entered into the profession for one or both of the same reasons.

Growing up, I liked to argue. Friends, family, people I met on the street, it didn't matter. I was all about being the one with the answer, being the one with the last word on any subject.

Also, I had a real thirst for knowledge. I just wanted to know "why". Why do police have to say the "Miranda" warnings? Why are those signs posted on the side of the road like that? Why? Why? Why? I wanted to be the one who knew those answers, or, more importantly, how to find out those answers.

Sometimes the business of the law can wear you down. As a lawyer, I think we need to remind ourselves that we do not just have a job. We have a calling and we should treat ourselves and the others we work with or against, with all the respect that such a vocation deserves.
