Business is such an universal, yet diverse subject. In fact, that is what made me want to take it in college, because it was flexible and could be used in a variety of ways on many different wavelengths. When it comes to essential business skills for project managers, there is a lot to embrace as the concept plays quite a few roles.
The key is possessing business knowledge. If you possess knowledge, you can do anything in project management. Although, this is easier said than done, it does take work, as well as, time. Business is so universal and diverse, if you possess over a fraction of that knowledge above the average business quo, you will do great. Science has physics and science has chemistry, among many other sciences; whereas, business has marketing and business has finance, among many other business specialties. If you can possess knowledge of general business, including it's specialties, you will succeed as a project manager.
As you possess that knowledge, it is important to hold that knowledge in your long term memory. The best way to learn is to find the strengths and benefits, that make you interested in the field. It is extremely important to challenge yourself. The key is connecting and projecting with your knowledge, to the extent that it turns into a radical interest and wisdom. The only way to do this is to think big and want bigger. You also want to be able to find solutions, when being drowned with problems, as you want to be able to come up with any answer, when being put on the spot with any question.
For any project manager to be moderately successful it is important to have great communication skills. Communication skills are extremely relevant and tend to vary on a variety of wavelengths. Whether it be general business communication or oral communication or interpersonal communication or network communication, ie. If you develop an interest, a wisdom to communicating, you will do great with this job because it's the most important.
Business skills are essential, as well as, important for project managers and do show true results in due time.
