Establishing yourself as an expert or opinion leader in your field

How do you become an expert in any field? You become an expert first by keeping your mouth closed and your eyes, ears and mind opened. This is the way you learn the basics that any expert needs. When you have done your research and learned all you can by observations, reading and research you open your mouth and start asking questions. Because you have done your home work the questions that you ask will be pertinent, intelligent and further your knowledge on the subject matter.

Meet others who are interested in the same field as you.

Join organizations and volunteer your expertise and time. If you want to be a writer and an expert join a writers club, offer editing tips, become involved in the field in every way you can. You may want to think of it this way "immerse yourself in a bubble bath full of .... " That may seem simplistic, but it reminds one every day to check and see if they have added something their my bubble bath of knowledge and experiences that they are working on. Proficiency in any field takes time and effort.

Prove your credibility.

Site your sources. Give credit to those who taught you things and gave you information. If you have received a degree, a certification, a letter of thanks, don't hesitate to use those. They help to show others that you walk the walk.

Publish your findings.

There are so many ways to communicate now that you can share your knowledge globally in seconds. You can write articles and publish them on line. You can write a company newsletter. You can write "how to" instructions. You can give a power point presentation. You can be a featured speaker. You can publish and e-book. Sharing your knowledge establishes you as expert.

Create enthusiasm.

I was not thrilled at the thought of tooting my own horn. It just seemed wrong to me. On the other hand, I was proud of my work and wanted to share it with others and get their opinion. So first I ran it by "Mom". She created enthusiasm with people I never spoke to and soon I was asked to speak in the Senior Center. Not glamorous, but another notch in the belt for my credibility and experience.

Test your ideas

A trusted friend is a good person to run an idea by. They are your friend, so there will be not ridicule. They will give an honest answer. They have a vested intertest in your success.

No one likes a know- it- all so remember there is always more for you to learn. Closed minds tend to get stale and moldy. Don't let it happen to you.
