Cooking uses and healing properties of sage

by Allyjay

Sage has to be one of the most beneficial herbs for medicinal uses. It is a ilvery green plant which let's off a lovely fragrance. It was first found in the Mediterranean but now is also found in parts of North America. It has been widely used for both medicinal and culinary purposes.

Sage oil contains alpha and beta thujone, camphor and cineole all of which are chemical substances that aid healing.

Clinical studies have shown that the oil from sage may offer anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-virus effects.

It is commonly used for sprains, swelling, ulcers and bleeding. Herbalists used it for Rheumatisim, Menstrual Bleeding, to strengthen the nervous system and even to improve memory.

Sage is often used as a tea to benefit sore throats and coughs, and also as a mouth-wash for mouth infections and gingivitis. To make a mouthwash you simply take 3 grams of sage leaf and add it to 150ml boiling water. Leave to for 10 minutes and allow to cool, strain the leaves from the water, and use the water as a gargle or mouthwash.

As well as it's medicinal purposes, sage is also an impressive addition to the kitchen, lovely with chickenand turkey, also used widely in the stuffings we use for poultry.
