Short stories: The detective meets the murderer

Daniel sat in the 10 x 13 mirrored room. Tapping his fingers on the steel table, he laughed out right. It was the laugh of defeat. Daniel knew that behind one of those mirrors was Manny, the bane of his killing spree. For six long months, he'd given Manny many restless and sleepless nights. Laughing again, Daniel turned his chair towards the mirrored walls, staring, hoping to provoke some response from behind the mirrors.

Yeah, Manny was watching alright, he knew it irritated Daniel to sit in the enclosed small room, he hated being hemmed in by walls. Daniel had given him a run for his money. Six months of senseless murders, six months of restless, sleepless nights. His persistence paid off, they had caught Daniel. Tonight the small town of Melton could rest knowing the murderer had been caught.

Manny knew that as sure as he stood there breathing air, the time would come when he'd catch Daniel, and he did. Karma was that way, it eventually caught up with you. Manny supposed in some sick and twisted way Daniel couldn't help the need to kill. It seemed like the compulsion ran through him, like one needs blood running through their veins to live. Manny stood there watching for a few more seconds and headed for the interrogation room.

Chair slightly leaning back, eyes closed, Daniel brought to mind the images of each of his killings. The feel of the blade was orgasmic to him. Some would call it a sickness, but to Daniel it was an art. His heart started pumping faster as he remembered the way his victims would cry out as knife and skin touched. Maybe he was sick, it mattered not to him. What did matter was that Manny had caught him. He hated feeling like a specimen under a microscope. Letting his chair drop back to the floor, he opened his eyes and shouted to the mirrors, come on! Finally hearing footfalls approaching, the door opened and his nemesis stepped in.

The waiting had irritated Daniel, Manny smile. Anything to make this scumbags life a little less pleasant was his goal, that and justice. You lead me on quite a chase boy. I knew we'd eventually meet up. Snarling, Daniel shrugged his shoulders and made the comment," yeah well I guess eventually had to happen." Cold murderous eyes looked at Manny with defiance. It was an eerie feeling looking into a black hearted soul.

Killer and detective face to face. Each equally determined to see the other fail. Each had been just as motivated for different reasons, to succeed. This time good prevailed and the murderer had been caught. Daniel wasn't going to make it easy for Manny. If Manny wanted to know the whys, then he'd have to dig for them. That thought brought the smile back to Daniel's face.

Manny had to question what it was in life that turned people to killers? Did the beast within take over and bring out man's primal thirst for blood? Whatever the reason, it dug a little deeper when it was your own. Gathering his thoughts and emotions together Manny look his son straight in the eyes and said, "Okay son, lets start from the top."
