Bible study: Assessing whether Old Testament laws should be kept

When Old becomes New

In the days before Jesus Christ, People governed their lives around the Old Testament Laws. These laws created the template for religious living in the times of B.C. They were encompassed by the Ten Commandments which were given to Moses by God the Father. The laws of the Old Testament are no different from the laws that law enforcement agents make grand efforts to enforce in today's society. Don't commit thefts, petty or grand. Do not commit homicide and any other crime that Old Testament Law communicates that we should not commit.

It is my understanding from reading the Word of God that those who break these laws should be punished, therefore, feeling God's wrath. "Thou shall have no other god before Me." This is one of the laws that stands out because we often times forget who or what should be our main focus as Christ following individuals. If I have an idol god such as fame, then surely God, who says He is a jealous God may see it fit to remove that idol from me to allow me to see more clearly that He should be my only focus.

Another good example is paying bills i.e taxes. That was a laws that taxes were paid to the collectors who came in the name of the anointed Kings. Just as they had to pay taxes, we also today have the same responsibilities. If we do not pay taxes, then there is punishment, penalties if you will for not adhering to the law.

When a believer patterns his or her life such as that of Jesus Christ; by following the two commandments Jesus mentions in "Matthew 22:37-38", the Old Testament laws are automatically being executed. Being a Christian is tough. It sometimes gets to the point when you may want to say hey, give me those written out laws, that way I know word for word how I should govern may acts and this is my punishment. God does not force us to follow the Old Testament laws, it is a choice we must make for ourselves. However, if we do break the laws God has in place for us we will surely be punished in some form.

In the New Testament Jesus said "Love the Lord with all your heart with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandment." Matthew 22:37-38

My assessment today is that yes the "Old Testament laws should be kept" based on the points stated above. Amen.
