I've been reading the cards for a long time. My first deck was a gift from a friend when I was about 15 and it turned out to be so uncannily accurate it scared me and I tossed the deck and the accompanying hardcover book away.
Flash-forward to 15 years later: I was working on a novel set in 19th century Hungary and Romania about gypsies. I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a deck and revisit the Tarot and learn about it. As it turned out, no scenes with Tarot Cards went into the book, but I came to understand a great deal more about Tarot and my own intuition.
The first reason the cards "work" is because they are based on archetypes: that is, things all of us experience at some level. Examples: Mother, Father, Relationships, sorrow, joy, nature, waiting, death, rebirthyou begin, I trust, to get the idea.
Jung believed very strongly in a collective unconscious; a wellspring that as a species we draw from. Archetypes are a big part of that reservoir; they are symbols or shorthand for our common experience, our day to day lives, our knowledge as human beings.
The major Arcana (if you examine any deck) contains all or most of the archetypes we're familiar with: The World (what we desire); The Wheel (the ups and downs in life); Judgment (both as Judgment Day and everything from legal matters to forming opinions about others); The Hierophant (our response to tradition and culture); The Devil (our fears and inner demons) etcyou name it, it's in the Tarot.
The minor Arcana contain to a slightly lesser degree the same archetypes, the same lessons, the same experiences: being confused or torn, needing a rest, being upset over a broken relationship, success in career, sudden light at the end of a dark tunnel, et al. Again, the cards mirror our daily lives, the things we live with and know deeply.
Used honestly and wisely, the cards are a great tool for learning about what is going on in your life in the present, what influences from the past are affecting you, and what is likely to happen.
How Can They Predict?
The Tarot Cards can predict the most likely outcome for you because they resonate with your emotions. Simply stated this means that (at any given moment) your unconscious beliefs in things working positively or negatively influence what will happen.
Of course, nothing is written in stone. That's why major league baseball players, football players, dancers, actors (etc) use visualizing for better outcomes. That's why hypnosis can work when you want to lose weight
