Developing project scope for project management

A project is essentially a package of work that contains objectives that must first be completed prior to putting out a new product or service. A project's scope is usually up to the discretion of the project manager, who typically delegates what measures will be taken to ensure the creation of the product.

Scope planning varies greatly depending on the type of project, its complexity, and the sponsor or organization's assets. Scope definitions are shaped by deliverables, constraints, and assumptions that have been determined during the project's initiation phase. Typically, project managers will draw on their personal experiences and knowledge about past projects and methodologies when developing the project's scope.

As managers move from the initiation to the planning process of project management, they will often develop a scope statement which accurately encompasses the scope of the project and a scope management plan. Since projects are constantly evolving, especially as they grow more detailed, changes will inevitably change the project's scope. A well-thought out project scope management plan will help managers to facilitate changes and reduce the probability of incurring unexpected scope creep later in the project.

An effective scope management plan must contain forms and standards pertaining to change requests and work breakdown structure templates. Project managers should ensure that they create a reasonable process to formally verify the completion of all deliverables.

Overall, spend an adequate amount of time working on strengthening your scope statement and scope management plan. Without a clear, concise statement to define the project's intentions and schedule, you could find yourself lost among unnecessary work that might have not been required for your project's completion, thereby squandering valuable time and resources.
