Controlling rosacea

Rosacea is a skin inflammation disease with redness and swelling. No cure is available, but controlling the condition with treatment is effective. It is a chronic disease that affects 14 million people, and if left untreated worsens over time. Fortunately, scientific research provides a good amount of information on rosacea and how to control it.

Controlling the skin inflammation of rosacea is generally successful using anti-inflammatory topical and oral antibiotics or other sulfur drugs as prescribed by your physician or dermatologist. Azelaic acid is used in treating rosacea also. Severe cases may be treated with laser technology and medication. In addition to the prescribed treatment by the doctor, self care and cleansing techniques are an important part of controlling rosacea.

Rosacea affects more women than men, but the redness and swelling is sometimes more pronounced in men especially in the nose area. Women typically have the redness and swelling on the cheeks, forehead or chin. It can resemble acne in appearance and it often affects social interactions and professional lives of those who suffer from this condition.

Flare-ups occur in cycles and are triggered by various elements. The most common triggers to flare-ups are sun exposure, emotional stress, hot water, wind, heavy exercise and alcohol consumption.

Treatment and control of rosacea often restores the emotional and social well being of individuals who have this condition.
