Almost every person that's ever taken a cruise has encountered (at least once) a shock when they get their final bill at the end of the trip. The biggest mistake many cruisers make is not paying attention to how much they're spending.

Even on all-inclusive cruises there are many things that are are not included such as alcoholic drinks, excursions, spa services, soda and sometimes juice. It is easy to get caught up on a cruise and spend way more than you intend. There is always someone available to take a drink order or sell you some "extra" amenity. When cruising pay close attention to how much you are charging on your room card. It is helpful to check your account daily to ensure you aren't spending tons of money.

Another common mistake is not packing appropriate clothing and footwear. Most cruise lines expect you to dress for dinner if you are planning to eat in the main dining room. Pack nice clothing, suit jacket and slacks for men and dresses, skirts, dress pants for women. There is usually at least one "formal" night where formal wear is required. This does not mean a tux (although if you have one and want to wear it it is acceptable) but a suit for men and fancy or cocktail dress for women is required.

Bring comfortable walking shoes. If you plan on taking a hike, walking tour or shopping at one of the ports don't plan on wearing your cute stilettos it's not practical and you won't last long. Bring shoes you can walk comfortably in for more than 10 minutes.
