Mexicans are not the only ones who embrace the festive holiday known as Cinco de Mayo. Many Americans use it as an excuse to be merry and have a drink or two. Or six. In fact, it is a lot like the way we celebrate St. Patrick's Day. But that is neither here nor there, so let's discuss how students can participate in this holiday too.
World culture days are very common among school districts. Additionally, they have been more concerned with celebrating foreign observed holidays, such as Cinco de Mayo. The schools I attended were no different. Every year the halls and rooms would be decorated with streamers, pinatas, and other Mexican paraphernalia. It really brought the school to life. It also gave us the chance to learn about a culture that most of us were not familiar with.
We learned about Mexico and why this day is so revered in their culture. On this day in 1862, the Mexicans overcame astonishing odds and defended themselves against opposing armies. Once we discussed the background on the holiday, fun and games ensued. We made Mexican flags, colored festive pictures, busted open the pinata filled with goodies, and enjoyed a wide variety of Mexican foods.
I believe that the food aspect was the most interesting for us. I have always enjoyed trying out different kinds of food, so this was a special treat. Everyone in the class would bring in their own Mexican dish. We tried different snacks, entrees, and even delicious desserts.
Having a variety of activities to participate in created something to do for everyone to enjoy. Even the teacher seemed to be having a good time in her sombrero. By the end of the day I always had a great appreciation for the Mexican culture. This classroom fiesta left me wanting a siesta from all the crazy fun we had.
