How to become a better person

Becoming a better person is a very personal journey. There is no right and wrong way to go about it. The process will vary greatly from person to person. Making a decision to improve yourself is a fantastic thing to do, it can increase your self esteem, your enjoyment of life, your relationships, your career, your health, there are endless possibilities.

There are several popular ways to become a better person, but before you start it is very important to sit down and think about what becoming a better person means to you. Do you want to be healthier, fitter, kinder, richer? Do you want qualifications, experiences, fame, wealth? Who do you want to be, what do you hope to achieve, what do you feel would make you into a better person? Why do you feel that, are you sure it's the right thing for you? Make sure that you are working towards your true opinion of a better person rather than just trying to achieve what society thinks you should achieve.

Once you have decided what type of changes you would like to see in your life, you need to define the actual steps that you need to take in order to make the required changes. What physical actions do you need to take, what mental shifts do you need to make? What exactly is it that you need to change in order to get to where you want to be?

Once you have identified what it is that you're changing, you need to plan when and how you will apply the changes. If your goal is to get fit, decide when you can fit gym visits into your schedule for example. If it is to lose weight then a target date could be appropriate as well as planning some different meals or changing where you eat out. If you want to learn a new skill then find information sources and plan time to practice. Figure out the details so that you know exactly what you need to do and when you need to it.

Now you have an action plan, you should think about how you are going to make sure that you stick to it. Do you need support from friends, would it help you to blog about your progress, do you need to leave yourself notes and reminders? Try to stick to positive motivators rather than things that will make you feel bad if you fail. Some people need a lot of encouragement from others, some find it helpful to reward themselves for progress, which type of person are you? What can you do to help yourself stick to your plan, to help yourself succeed?

Once you have figured out who you want to be, what you need to change, how you plan to do it and what you need to keep you going, you should be ready to begin applying the changes to your life. Jump in and see what you can achieve, push yourself, keep going, and enjoy the benefits of making a positive change to your life.

Of course, we're not all perfect, allow yourself some mistakes, some days where you just can't face it. Don't feel bad about it, don't be too hard on yourself, and most of all, don't give in. Keep your focus on the better you that will emerge as you continue on your journey. Imagine how great it will feel when you become the person you hope to be. It will be worth it.

As you go about your life making the changes you planned, take some time to monitor your progress. If you are moving at a faster or slower rate to your original plan, tweak it until you find something that suits your pace. What is important is that you are making improvements, not that you are perfectly following a self imposed schedule. Keep thinking about what you are trying to achieve and why you want it. Don't get wrapped up in the minor details, they are just there to guide you along your path.

And most of all, enjoy the journey!
