Celebrate Cinco de Mayo: Party ideas

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican Independence and in California the parties start early and continue until no one is left awake! It includes the whole family, communities and towns. It is colorful and fun for everyone.
1. Make sure you use your theme for Mexican Independence and not American fun. Both are fine but you want to make this holiday special from all the others we celebrate.

2. Colors. Use lots of green and red. Crete paper and spirals, flowers and candies wrapped in these colors. Cover tables with red and green cloth with center pieces made by the kids.
3. Have a couple of pinatas hanging in the yard. These are supposed to be for the kids so fill theirs with candies. If you are going to have one later in the evening for adults make sure you have enough room for swinging the stick without hitting any of the other guest. Make sure the pinata is thin and will break easily because most adults by this time have had quite a bit to drink. Fill the adult one with liqueur candies and dollar bills. Never put anything glass in a pinata.
4. Lots and lots of food! Traditional Mexican dishes as well as a BBQ with everyone bringing something.
5. Drinks. Most of the time it is Mexican beer, sangria's and soda. Watch the kids! Always have one or two people that do not drink so the can drive everyone home, but most of the time the party will continue late and everyone finds a place to sleep at the party. It can almost be like a big camp out. No one drives and dies this way.
6. Lots of music. Tradition Mexican music, modern Mexican music, classical guitar and of course rock and roll from both sides of the border! If you have talent among your guest then encourage them to perform throughout the party.
This is a time of celebration for families and friends so make it a happy one with lots of good food, music and fun. No fights, arrests and old feuds.
