Fired: How to handle it on your resume

If you were fired from a job, it can become very tricky what to put on a resume. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to not mention at all the fact that you were fired. This goes for both the resume and the cover letter. Even if you have had a history of being fired from more than one company, (assuming that you have worked out your personal issues if there were any) you should choose a resume format that avoids using dates. Your goal with the resume and cover letter is to get an interview. If an employer sees that you were fired, even if it was not your fault, then you are much less likely to be considered for a position. You won't even be given a chance. Once you have an interview, now you can (and should) discuss briefly what happened. The benefit of waiting till the interview, aside from getting the interview itself, is that now everything can be taken in context and the way you personally present the situation can have a greater impact than seeing something written on paper.
