If you have recently lost your job in the US, you may be eligible to receive unemployment insurance. Unemployment insurance is a state-operated program under which you are entitled to benefit payments while you are unemployed. These benefits are financed solely by employers' payroll taxes not by any deductions from your wages, and they are available to unemployed workers who meet state qualifying and eligibility requirements. However, state laws vary regarding eligibility for benefits, the amount of benefits, and the amount of weeks which may be paid. Many states also require that you are able to work and are actively looking for another job. So you need to check with your local State Department of Labor to find out the details. Most if not all state labor departments have websites, and some states even allow you to apply for unemployment insurance on-line.
But you should keep in mind that your ability to receive the insurance will really depend on the reason for your being fired as well as how cooperative your employer is. Also know that if your claim was rejected you can appeal it.
