How to avoid sea sickness on a cruise

Just let me die! A phrase uttered by many a sea-sick cruise passenger. Luckily euthanasia is not practiced on cruise ships and the green-gilled passenger is sure to make a recovery to normal health.

To avoid the bilious feeling that can accompany ocean travel, known as sea-sickness, start before you leave home by adding a little fresh ginger root to your food and drinks. Add some to your cooking and a little to fresh fruit juices.

Ginger has a calming effect on the stomach and is one of the ingredients used in many tablets to combat sea-sickness.When on board ask for a little ginger in hot water.

Even if you don't suffer from sea-sickness, pack some anti-sea sickness pills just in case the swell doesn't make you feel swell. There are also wrist bands that work on pressure points that can help alleviate the symptoms of sea sickness.

When you're on board the ship, spend as much time as possible out on deck in the fresh air. Read a magazine, something light that will take your mind off of the rolling boat. When you look out to sea, focus on the horizon and not the waves.
Staying inside the boat will make you feel worse so walk or sit out on deck.

Drink lots of water and isotonic drinks even though you may not feel like it. Being dehydrated will make the sea-sickness worse and take longer to get over.

When you're appetite returns, start with small meals or snacks and avoid fatty foods and alcohol. You may feel better but your stomach will need a little longer recovery time.
