How bats can be helpful guests in your garden

Bats get a bad rap! These creatures are so useful around the yard since they thrive on insects-especially mosquitoes. We built a very nice bat house and hung it at the end of my house up high. So far, we cannot tell if the bats live there or not but I know I have bats around the yard. At one point, I kept noticing what looked like mouse droppings on my picnic table under the umbrella. The umbrella had been closed for a couple weeks due to the weather and high wind. I finally opened it up, and a little bat was living at the very top of the inside of it. I was so happy to see that guy up there because I knew he was surviving on the mosquitoes in my yard.

I think we should not bother these creatures but do all we can to encourage them to live near our yards. I would much rather have bats than bugs!
