Writing is a form of expression that allows fluid conveyance of thought in a way quite unlike speaking, drawing, acting, body language and other forms of creative articulation. I recall an interview I saw on television with Arthur Miller, the late great playwright who was married to Marilyn Monroe and most known for 'Death of a Salesman'. In it he said via paraphrase, "complacency will not make you a great writer". Point being, passion about something whether it be a cause, belief, interest or topic is a necessary ingredient and writing about that passion makes a writer.
Writing quite possibly is the writers favorite medium of communication as in some writer's minds there is preference. Moreover, some writers would sometimes rather communicate deep, thought provoking and substantial thoughts via writing. Not only does it feel natural, writing also articulates thoughts in a different context and dynamic than spoken words that are "tainted" by body language, environment, expression and innuendo. Writing is a thus a medium by which writers can articulate in a way possible by no other form of expression i.e. the written word.
Writing is also fun for writers; the imagination and creative juices stir and seem to blend effortlessly into sentences that mean something regardless of if anyone is reading it. Whatever one's writing preference, there are many forms and styles of writing to choose from, 1) novel writing, 2) poetry 3) essay writing, 4) creative writing 5) technical writing 6) word art 7) script writing 8) journalistic writing and so on. With all these potential writing exercises available, it's no wonder so many people from so many avenues of life find writing enjoyable. What's more, expression is a natural human trait, and writing is a form of expression.
Another reason writers write is talent and capacity for wordsmithing, and in the case of writers who have no other talents, then writing skill can become a primary reason to write i.e. "If all you have is lemons, make lemonade." For some the talent may be there, but no desire exists, for others the passion for a subject exists, but not talent is there and for still more the desire and some talent is present. Whatever ones unique circumstance regarding the art and craft of writing, there are often benefits to writing that writers know about. It feels good, it can help one understand things and thoughts, it can re-describe the world, topics, perspectives, feeling and thoughts in new, different ways, and in
