College is a very difficult thing to pay for and budget for, as there are so many unexpected expenses that come along with college. While it can be easy to figure out a reasonable price of what things like tuition and room can cost, things like food, books, and entertainment can be hard to predict and budget for.
First off, you need to plan ahead, and have some things in mind beforehand. Going into college, you need to do a little bit of research about what you expect things to cost and how much money you'll need. That means looking up and trying to find some realistic guesses as to how much money you'll need for food, rent, tuition, books, etc. If you don't budget some and plan all of that out, you could have a tough time meeting all of those expenses.
If you have done your homework beforehand and have a basic idea of what things will cost and how much, then it all just comes down to discipline. You have to be disciplined enough to be able to go make the money that you need, and then disciplined enough not to spend it on frivolous things, but on the things that you need to go to school. It is one thing to budget how much money you are going to need, but it is quite another to actually be able to save that money. This is made especially tough by being in school full time, as that leaves far less time to actually work and be able to earn the money.
Sometimes it's hard to have a long-term focus, and you'll buy things now instead of saving some of the money for expenses you know you'll have later. That is a temptation that you have to avoid. If things are properly budgeted out, then that can help to avoid straying off the path. As with anything, you have to stick to your budget diligently, or else it is worthless.
So it comes down to having the foresight to develop a budget to know what you need, and then the discipline and hard work to stick to that. If you can do these two things and possess these qualities, then you shouldn't have too much trouble saving and budgeting for college expenses. But if you don't properly do these things, then you will leave college with a mountain of debt that could have been avoided.
