Short stories: First dates

"The Grasp"

My headlights barely pierce the fog that hangs in the sky like a blanket covering a shivering child. The rain pelts the windshield of my car relentlessly as I struggle to watch the road through the mist. The monotonous pattering sound the rain produces as it thumps against my windshield calms me slightly. I continue down the two-lane road at a cautious speed hoping to arrive in time, and in one piece.

Ten minutes ago, I was sitting at Benchwarmers, a local sports bar, putting back a few cold beers and catching up with my buddies. I joked and exchanged stories with them, but my thoughts drifted elsewhere. There was somewhere else I wanted to be. A cheesy cell phone ring interrupted our laughter, and I enthusiastically reached into my pocket grasping for my phone. As I pressed the accept button, I noticed my friends roll their eyes anticipating what was to come.

Now I'm out here enduring this storm, on this treacherous two lane road. "Why the heck am I out here?" I thought to myself while the hearty laughs and protests of my friends during my departure echoed through my head. One pleaded "Come on! stay and play some poker tonight!" Another declared "I haven't seen you in months, and you are just going to leave just like that!" Sounds of make believe whips followed me out door of the restaurant "Whappssh, Whapssh!" Nonetheless, I made my way through the parking lot and headed toward highway 54.

Suddenly, I feel my tire pull sharply to the right. My car jerked, and I turned the wheel to straighten out then begin to hydroplane toward the ditch on the side of the road. Just as my tires near the edge of the shoulder, I manage to regain control of the vehicle. The rain was indifferent; it continued to pelt the windshield. My heart is beating rapidly at this point; I feel my rib cage vibrating with every palpitation. A few beads of sweat form at my temples threatening to spill into my eyes. I detest driving! These conditions were only adding to my abhorrence. I wonder again "Why did I skip out on poker night? What made me leave so abruptly?" I reflect for a moment on the unseen force that has motivated me to venture into this weather. My thoughts swirled aimlessly attempting to pinpoint any logic at all. Thats when I realized that there was no logic at all! I decided to leave because...

HONK! HONK! a thunderous horn disrupts my thoughts and intense high beams blind me. A semi truck speeds by instigating a brigade of water droplets to bombard my windshield causing
