A before-you-cruise checklist

There is only one problem with cruising. Once you get on the ship, if you forgot something important, you may have to learn to live without it. The ships have shopping and many things onboard, but they don't have a Wal Mart. So, you could be out of luck. The trick is to make a checklist as you are preparing for your cruise. Start this about a month ahead of time if you are going a cruise of 5 or more days. For a 3 day cruise, most people can tough it out unless you forgot your suitcases.

Some items need to be addressed a while ahead of time. If a passport is needed, you need to begin the process if possible 3 months ahead of time. After this, you checklist needs to be detailed about everything you want to take. Write down everything you think you might need. Over the next few weeks, keep adding to the list right up to the day before you leave.

On that last day, go over each item on your list and make sure it is packed. Put everything near the door where you will exit. By doing this, it will help you not forget to load anything into the car or the taxi. If you are not comfortable with putting your valuables near a door, put them in an obvious place where everything can be kept together. When that space is empty, you have gotten everything loaded.

Your check list needs to include a few items that may not always be taken on other trips. If your cruise is tropical, take a high Spf sunscreen. Make sure it's fresh and still active. Even if you are traveling in the winter, the tropical sun is still quite intense. Some people burn in the tropics that don't have problems with sunburn normally. A hat is a good idea, too. Something with a brim to protect your ears. While we're talking sun, don't forget the sunglasses.

Most of the time insects aren't a big problem on a cruise. However, it you are going to Central America, you will want to take some insect repellent with a 100 deet or the equivalent. No need to come home with a malaria reminder that you needed insect repellent.

Pack about 1 1/2 or 2 outfits per day for your cruise. You may need more if you are taking excursions. Include clothes for any formal nights in the dining room. Make sure you have everything you need for your camera. Pictures are a big deal on vacations and especially cruises. Many people enjoy a pair of binoculars although I have found them of limited value.

Make sure your ticket booklets are on the checklist and a driver's license of other picture ID. This booklet may have items listed in that you need to add to list. Your passport will serve this purpose, but it's not a good idea to carry it around on shore visits if you don't have to. They are targets of thieves.

Make sure you include the right kind of shoes. You will need dress shoes for formal night, and comfortable shoes for other times. If you plan to be in the water, a pair of water shoes will be good. At least one pair of sandals is worth taking.

Pack clothes for the trip going and returning. This is more necessary if you are driving than flying. Take at least one credit card with plenty of room on the limit. Your checkbook or debit card ought to make the trip.
