Driver safety: How to encourage teens to drive safely

It is important to ensure your teen drives safely after getting a license. The key for parents to remember is to give the teen driving time. The average amount of driving time in most states is not enough to give the teen ample experience. Ride with your teen and encourage safe driving.

Have the teen become familiar with routes to the store, gas station, school and any other place you normally drive. Knowing the roads will help your teen focus more on driving instead of how to get somewhere.

Remain calm while the teen is driving. Letting your teen know that you trust them will help them focus on their driving skills. If you are a nervous wreck they are going to feel the bad vibes and be more nervous. Everyone makes more mistakes when they are frazzled.

Make sure that your teen drives well rested. Teens or adults that drive tired are apt to make mistakes. Encourage your teen to get plenty of rest before driving.
Limit driving to secondary roads and roads that are not too busy. Teens should drive during daylight hours. After they have had a minimum of 20 hours behind the wheel, then let your teen venture onto highways or driving at night.

The key to ensure your teen drives safely after getting a license is to give them time behind the wheel. Supervise them and encourage them to develop good driving habits as they get more hours behind the wheel.
