Never underestimate the abilities of your toddler. If a child is old enough to understand simple directions, they are old enough to start helping with some simple chores around the house. This not only makes them feel more a part of the family, but it begins teaching them responsibility. If the chores you give them are appropriate, both you and your child will benefit from these new experiences.
When determining what chores your toddler can do, think about your individual home. Their bedroom is a good place to start. If you place a hamper in a location that they can get to, there is no reason that they can't pick up their clothes each day and put them into the hamper. They are probably ready to pull the blankets up neatly on their bed or to put their toys into the toy bin. They may need reminders at first, but eventually it will become a habit if encourage and reinforced.
Other chores that your toddler can help with come in the area of kitchen help. Take a close look. Is your little one able to put the napkins or something on the table? Possibly they can carry some of the condiments for you while you work on some other aspect of dinner. Begin allowing them to help with simple kitchen tasks such as putting cool whip on the pudding or stirring the chocolate into their milk. The kitchen is one of children's favorite places and this could be a very high quality time for you and them.
Teaching your toddler to help with pet care is never a bad thing. They will need to be supervised with some of the tasks, but before you know it, they will be reminding you that it is time to change the dog water. There is nothing better than a pet to teach a child responsibility.
For each family, the chore list will be divided differently. The important thing is not to leave your toddler out or to discount their abilities. Children often want to imitate their older siblings and parents. As long as the chores are safe and taught to the child, this will benefit the entire household.
