Why Hong Kong is a good holiday destination

Two years ago my husband and I arrived in Hong Kong for a brief two day stay on the way to our final destination of Bali, Indonesia. After a grueling 12 hour flight, (the plane was packed and uncomfortable), we left the airport in an over stuffed bus of passengers and suitcases, which weaved in and out of traffic down the long highway to hotel destinations off of Nathan Road in Kowloon. It was nearly midnight as we drove along, some people dozing off but others were craning to see what they could from the bus windows in the darkness. I was one of these souls, looking to see the wonder which is Hong Kong. What greeted my eyes were hundreds of tall sky scrapers, filled with lights. Many of these had long advertisements running down the length of them - like a billboard but as I said the length of the building! It was stunning to see! The colors of the lights were not necessarily white, as they are here, but of different hues of color which made the skyline almost magical. Hong Kong, a destination that I never thought I would ever see in my life time was here before me and I was ready to take it all in!

Of course, upon arriving at our hotel, we had to sleep. It had been a long trip as I have said, sitting in a crowded plane for 12 hours or more, then the long walk in the airport, through customs and then onto that very crowded bus. My husband and I were physically and mentally exhausted, and it wasn't long before we climbed into bed, not even bothering with the shower that I had longed for, it was just too much trouble.

We woke the next morning with aches and pains, but anxious to see the sights. After a breakfast provided by the hotel - (it was a smorgasbord affair, which featured some eggs and toast as well as wieners and beans!) We left the hotel with no plan for the day just to soak it all in.. the sights and smells and everything that was available! The first reaction was holy cow look at all the people! The sidewalks and even the streets were literally swarming with people going different directions all in a mass. I thought to myself do we dare get into this fray? Would we ever be able to get out of it! Oh heck, let's go for it! Out we did, into the crowd, finding that we had to fight to insure we were going the way we had chosen.

I found it surprising that there were different ethnic groups there. Many from India. I guess I was ignorant to think that the city would just be Chinese. It is a truly international city! It was interesting to see the different
