Why college football programs in southern states have more bowl game appearances

by Lupine

College football programs in southern states have more bowl game appearances because southern state schools place much more emphasis on college football than do colleges in other areas of the country.

In the south college football is almost a religion to legions of fans. In Florida many sports fans would rather talk college football than just about any other sport, including NASCAR. They absolutely love their college football down in the south.

Because such emphasis is placed on college football in the south by the fans, the colleges respond by hiring the best coaches and paying them the most money. They can afford to do this because the huge fan base gives them more revenue than teams from other parts of the nation get.

It is also easier for southern schools to recruit standout players from other parts of the country, especially the northeast. What kid who is a standout high school football prospect from a cold weather state in the northeast wouldn't want to go south to play football on a scholarship? Time and again kids have shown they want to get out of the cold weather and will head south to play their college football.

The same is true, but to a lesser extent for kids in the Midwest and west from cold weather states. They too will go south if given the chance most times.

Due to the heavy emphasis placed on college football in the south, combined with the lure of playing football in a warm weather state, southern colleges have better teams and therefore play more bowl games.
