Image of self

The image you have of yourself is significantly more important than anyone else's perception of you. Indeed, self-image has a huge impact on how much confidence each of us has, and how happy we will be throughout our lives.

The younger we are the less we tend to comprehend just who is inside of us. We have very little idea of our inner selves and struggle to find some kind of identity. The emphasis is often on the external self-image rather than the internal one, so that an angry pimple seems to be the end of the world

Images of beauty within the media often focus on the most youthful and attractive people. Sadly, these images of beauty on the front pages of magazines or in movies are somewhat responsible for people having a poor self-image, especially teens or very young adults. The young compare themselves to conventional images of gorgeousness. Their self -image suffers when they find themselves lacking in one way or another.

As the bloom of youth fades, most human beings tend to learn more about who they are in terms of character, values and beliefs. External images of the self and others slowly become less significant. When a person learns what makes them tick, the odd wrinkle does not seem to matter quite so much. As the mind and soul develops, we usually learn to relax.

The type of people who I feel most pity for regarding this issue are the beautiful ones who do not develop or change when it comes to self-image. There are some who stay focused on the external qualities of the self. Such a person's self-image suffers greatly when her/his looks begin to fade, and they do not grow old gracefully.

Of course, the life a person leads often has a profound impact on self-image. If a person acts inconsiderately and consistently takes instead of giving, or treats others appallingly, there may come a time when that person does not enjoy what they have become. For this reason, I think it is important to behave in a way that will allow us to sleep easily at night. It is hard to know peace if you are full of remorse over past actions, or if you view yourself as a depraved individual.

Conversely, the kinder and more giving a person is, the more contented they will ultimately be. Little could surpass reaching the age of eighty, looking into the mirror and being able to see, beyond the wrinkles and age spots, a person who has lead a remarkable life spent helping others and striving to make the world a better place.
