Reflections: Technology

Technology sucks.

Because of the advances in technology, our brains, and the brains of our children, are turning to mush. Everything done in a "normal" day, can now be done online. Shopping, talking, sending someone a birthday card, paying bills, and, ironically, earning money, to name a few.

The children of today do not even have to research their book reports. All they need is an internet connection, and the ability to copy and paste the information from a website. Press print, and voila... book report in 5 minutes!

We have all become too dependent on things like the internet, cellular phones, PDAs, GPS systems, and, now, there is even a car that can parallel park itself! Not fair, for all of us who had to pass our driver's test the old fashioned way! The recent Blackberry shut-down was proof of this dependency. Millions of people, professional adults, mind you, had no idea what to do without their little tool. Mass chaos was reported. Little did they know, that land-line telephones are still a means of communication.

People are "TIVO"-ing like crazy, too. That's mainly bad for advertising, since everyone always fast-forwards through the commercials. Since you are not watching live TV, you might miss a special news report of a tornado headed your way.

The technological advances in the internet have made people more impatient. High-speed DSL or cable connections have made us all expect too much too soon. We go stir crazy when things don't work right. There are people dying in other countries from poverty, and we are more concerned with why our high-speed internet connection takes 5 minutes to load, instead of instantly.

Everywhere you go, there is someone with a phone to, or device hanging out of, their ear. Yap yap yap chatter chatter chatter. We see/hear this in the grocery store, in line at the bank, and, the worst, while driving. The fun of having a song played out when your phone receives a call is becoming rather annoying, especially when it is not answered.

Technology can be a good thing. But, like all good things, abuse can turn it into a bad thing.
