If someone feels that they have a serious phobia that affects their normal functioning then they should seek the advice of a psychiatrist. The underlying reasons for a specific phobia may differ with each person.

Here are some questions one who has a driving phobia may ask them self:

1. Is there a deeper issue than simply being afraid to drive out one the road. This could be a self image issue.

2. What need does not driving solve? Is this choice keeping you safe or is it an excuse to not expand your personal boundaries?

3. What great things would happen if I overcame this "driving phobia"? When you focus on the benefits of driving you will be more motivated to overcome your phobia.

4. Am I simply giving myself a label? There is no shortage of "syndromes" or "phobias" which are used a ways to give oneself a comfortable label. Sometimes the only stable things people have in their lives are the labels that they give themselves.

The simplest advice in overcoming irrational fears is to gradually experience the thing you are afraid of. You can build up a series of small successful steps which turn into victory over your fear.
