Driver safety: What to do when you are the target of road rage

With reported episodes of road rage increasing every year it is a situation to be taken seriously. Even if you have not yet been a victim of 'Road Rage', the odds are that you will either be involved in a situation or witness a situation of Road rage sometimes in your driving experience.

Slight annoyances from other drivers resulting in 'censored finger signs' and glaring looks are not uncommon at all and have been a problem since highway driving became common, however Road Rage has shown a tendency to escalate to life-threatening behaviors.

It is a wise idea to have some type of safety plan in mind should you need it!

Many people drive in a highly stressed state because they leave home trying to 'beat the clock'. Packing everything into every spare minute, often there is no allowance for slow downs, traffic jams, flat tires or any of the numerous things which may cause a delay on the way to the intended destination. Frustration mounts along with the potential for uncontrolled rage!

Allow plenty of time to arrive at your destination, be sure to have spare tire, jack and other emergency equipment, know alternate routes and listen to traffic reports. Do all you can to maintain a relaxed, peaceful environment in your own vehicle.

If you happen to notice anyone driving erratically, or overly aggressively, stay away as much as possible and contact the highway patrol if you have a cell phone handy.

Try to avoid eye contact, do not return aggressive behavior with any responds, doing so usually only escalates the aggression from a driver already endangering lives!

Look for the nearest exit and get off the highway, head to the nearest police department or highway Patrol headquarters. Do not stop on the edge of the road to confront the driver by yourself.

Having a plan of action in mind before it is needed could save the lives of you, your family or some other drivers!
