HELMET WEARING
I have never understood the reluctance of so many motorcyclists to wear a helmet.
I have heard all the arguments and remain unconvinced. Helmet wearing is an infringement on one's personal freedom. Allowing the government to dictate what you wear is the thin edge of the wedge. If we allow them to force us to wear helmets where will it end? Big Brother will eventually control our lives.
I have worn a helmet for the thirty years I have been motorcycling. I have never felt it was an infringement on my personal freedom. If I was foolish enough to ride around without a helmet the government are welcome to punish me for such foolishness.
You see, road conditions are such nowadays that riding a motorcycle without proper protective gear is the height of foolishness. The standard of automobile operation is so bad in America we need all the protection we can get. The chances of being hit by an automobile while riding are extremely high. When that occurs one will find the contact of one's head with the automobile or road will be a painful and damaging experience.
When the wearing of helmets by motorcyclists became mandatory in Britain about 25 years ago many riders predicted the end of motorcycling as we knew it. It did not happen. There were protestations by the Motorcycle Action Group and others. Some individuals went to jail.
Today motorcycling is more popular than ever in Britain. That country produces more motorcycle magazines than any other. Where else would support a mass circulation weekly motorcycle newspaper? Motorcycle clubs, organizations and sporting events are widespread.
Along with the restriction of wearing a helmet and frequently inclement weather British motorcyclists have the added inconvenience of an extremely tough motorcycle test. How would you like your tester to follow you over a course dictating instructions to you on an ear receiver?
Of course, British riders realize there are advantages to helmet wearing other than accident protection. A helmet offers comfort, protection from cold, rain, wind, hail and insects. (Bugs in your teeth are not attractive.)
Some motorcycle riders claim they would wear a helmet if it were not for the jokes and ridicule leveled at them by their peers. Many unhelmeted riders consider the bear headed look to be cool, macho and tough.
So much for personal freedom and the right to make one's own choice. It is not good to have the government dictate what you wear but your friends can do it. Even if it involves risking your life.
Be your own person. Do not let others dictate what you do. Wear a helmet when you ride. You know you want to.
Oh yes, do not worry what the non - motorcycling public think. Those looks you get are not ones of envy. They do not think you look cool. They think you are an idiot and have no right to be on the road.
Why confirm their suspicions by refusing to were a helmet that will probably save your life one day?
