What in the world would we do without our friends, right? Unfortunately, sometimes, the people we think are our friends will not be there for us in the worst of times and it takes those worst of times to find this out. I've been there more than once and it's not fun. Here is my list of the top ten qualities most important in a friend.
1. Dependability- Your friend will stay true to you no matter what circumstances occur in your life. Even if there is a question about your character, if your friend is true, they will stick by you and never doubt you.
2. Honesty- A true friend will tell you the truth, even when it hurts, because they know the truth is better for you to hear in the long run. But, they will not be honest if the truth will only hurt and will never benefit you. They will find a way to accentuate the positives and play down the negatives as best as they can.
3. Flexibility- I think this is important because we are not all the same and we all have different interests and needs, and a real friend will do things with you or for you that they sometimes do not want to do, because they care about you and know you will reciprocate.
4. A real friend, you would hope, would want you in their life on a regular basis, so they should make as much of an effort to keep in touch with you, invite you to do things, and call you, as you would for them.
5. Loyalty- You should always be able to depend on your friend to stick up for you and to always have your best interests at heart over anyone else's.
6. Trustworthy- Your friend should be able to be trusted with your material belongings as well as all the emotional stuff. If you share a secret, you should never have a doubt that your friend will keep it without question.
7. Respectful- Your friend should always respect your position and opinion, whether or not they agree.
8. Open and Trusting- A good friend is willing to share parts of their life with you that they wouldn't share with others.
9. A good friend is willing to be themselves around you. They can let loose and do goofy things and not care what you think, and you should be able to do the same with them.
10. A friend gets excited about your accomplishments and successes. Almost as excited as you do, and you in turn feel the same way about their accomplishments and successes. As well, you feel their pain when they've had a failure or a disappointment, and they do for you. To know that your friend will listen attentively to you when you talk about the good and bad things in your life is very important.
