This list contains foods and other household poisons that are deadly to your parrots. This is by no means a complete list!
*Avacados are deadly to your parrots. This includes the tree, fruit and the seed.
*Booze: ALL alcohol.
*Candles: that contain lead that are burned in your home can give your parrot lead poisoning. Check the label. If it does not say it contains lead doesn't mean it doesn't! If it states No Lead, then it is OK.
*Celery: The strings on celery can cause blockage in your parrot's crop.
*Chicken bones: Just as with dogs, chicken bones splinter. If your parrot ingests a bone sliver, it is likely to need surgery! Surgery is not only costly but there is no "real" safe anesthesia. All anesthesia is potentially deadly to your bird. Do you really want to take that chance?
*Cleaners: Almost ALL household cleaners are deadly to your bird. Always remove your bird before using any type of cleaner in your home. When cleaning cages, use vinegar and mild dish soap and make sure you rince completely. The vinegar helps remove feces from your cage.
*Dairy products: All (except yogurt).
*Dog food: Although they love it and some breeders swear by it, dog food is not digested well and can cause a blockage in the crop or even in their delicate digestive systems. This includes dog treats as most contain onion powder.
*Drugs: any human drugs prescription or other are deadly.
*Fruit-other: Peaches-the pit as well as the meat around the pit contain cyanide. Sweet cherries-the tree, and any part of the fruit also contain cyanide.
*Galvanized metals: Galvanized metals bleed lead.
*Gum: Especially Ice Breakers and other sugar free varieties-contain a chemical that can be deadly to your bird.
*House plants: Many are deadly. Check your local poison control for information on the varieties that are in your household. A few safe plants are: Ficus tree, Spider plant, Roses, Sago palm, Eucalyptus, Fruitless as well as fruited Mulberry & Aspen.
*Lipstick: Most long lasting lipstick contains lead.
*Meat: Parrots cannot digest meat.
*Nightshades: Onions, eggplant etc.
*Non-stick cookware: All non-stick products! This includes the baking bags and the non stick aluminum foil. These products give off toxic gas that you can not smell that can kill your bird in a matter of minutes.
*Peanuts: Most seed brands do contain peanuts but what you don't know is that peanuts are a cheap filler for them. Peanuts can get a mold on them that is not visible to the naked eye that can kill your bird. Even if they peanuts are heated, the dead mold is just as dangerous! Most peanut butter is not tested for this for human consumption, do not feed your parrot peanut butter.
*Poisons; Remember rat and mouse poison tastes like peanuts! Make sure all poisons are locked away! Child proof locks does not mean your parrot can not get through it!.
*Polish and polish remover.
*Potatoes: Only the ones that are green. The green on a potato contains cyanide. (This is from leaving them in the sun after they are dug up.)
*Powder coating paint on cages: The lighter the color, the more lead they contain. If your parrot chews the paint off the cage, replace the cage with a stainless steel cage.
*Rosary beads: These seeds are deadly.
