How job shadowing can help you choose your college major

Job shadowing can be a very valuable tool when it comes to choosing a college major. When you shadow someone, you will be following them during the course of their day, studying what they do as a part of their job, and most likely helping them do certain tasks to really get a feel for what it is they do. When you are job shadowing, it is imprtant to choose a person employed in the field or fields that you are interested in. You shouldn't just shadow one or two people. Shadow as many people as you can and it will be a major help in your college major decision.

If you choose people in fields that you are uninterested in, you won't get anything out of the experience. But, on the other hand, if you choose people who are employed in fields that you are interested in, you will find yourself engaging in a very interesting, valuable, and fun experience.

Many professionals out there will allow you to shadow them doing their job if you contact them prior to just showing up. You will probably have to make an appointment with them and wear appropriate clothing. It is a good idea to take a notebook and pen/pencil with you so you can take notes on what you observe.

Sometimes, reading about a major or profession isn't enough to decide what you want to do. Sometimes, you have to just get out there and experience it for yourself before you can make a decision.
