Celebrity Privacy Should Be Commonplace
I read several articles on celebrity privacy before I decided to write my own article on the matter. And I have come to the not-so-shocking conclusion that, yes, of course celebrities are entitled to some level of privacy and that by God, both celebrities and the media are really full of themselves. I'll give you the answer to the question that you pose here on Helium and then I will explain what I mean.
Of course celebrities are entitled to some level of privacy. We are ALL entitled to some level of privacy because we are human beings with hectic lives and a lot of things to do. And when our jobs are done, we all need a little downtime. And one might argue that celebrities and people in the public eye are entitled to a higher level of privacy both because their lives in public can be so invasively draining and because if celebrities expect to have any meaningful longevity, they have a lot to do. More to do than time allows and they need privacy and quiet to complete as much as they can as well as they can.
But where I think both the media and celebrities have become a little full of themselves is in statements made by Michael Joseph Gross that "If you see George Clooney, you'll stare," and "If a star is out in public he or she is fair game. The law deems that you have no expectation of privacy," a bold assertion by Daniel Solove, a George Washington University law professor. Umm, why are these things the case? Does the general public no longer have manners? Did all of our mothers not teach us not to stare at anyone regardless of status? And are celebrities really so full of themselves that they forget that they are people who do a job that happens to be noticed by more people than merely working in a back office somewhere? I hope not. And let's just hope that the wave of the future is not "some kind of enclosed celebrity biosphere where they can all live together safe from those who want to document their every move and Macchiato purchase," as Mark Lisante of Hollywood blog Defamer would have us believe. Because I, for one, am not impressed. And neither the media nor celebrities themselves should be that impressed or closed off, either.
