Weighing alternatives to day care for working parents

No matter what you do, don't turn around. Looking back will not serve any good purpose. If you have done your research and deep down you know it is a safe and high quality place, be ready for that heart wrenching day when you have to leave your child for the first time at day care. There are many things to consider when choosing a day care and as all good parents know, it is not an easy decision to make.

Certainly every family must first and most importantly consider the safety of any day care. In considering safety, there are several things you could do. First, ask for some references from the day care provider. You want them to provide you with some names of parents that have used their services and would be willing to speak with you. As well as talking to other parents, don't hesitate to ask for a tour of all facilities. When looking around, look carefully for hazards and ask lots of questions. Where are cleaning supplies stored? Is there a safety fence around the outdoor play areas? These are types of things that you as a parent have a right to know. If anything seems out of place or if the provider seems to want to hide anything, keep looking.

When making a day care selection, you want to think about the number of children there will be in comparison to the number of adults. Your particular state should have some guidelines, but be sure to ask. This simple question can tell you a lot about the attention that your child will be receiving while in day care. As well as the number of children, it is important to consider the ages of children that will be attending. Often times, the younger the child, the more attention they need. Just be cognizant of the attention you know your child needs and deserves while still carrying reasonable expectations.

It would be an ideal world if we never had to consider cost of services like day care. After all, what parent doesn't want to provide the highest quality care for their little one. That being said, you do have to be sure you can afford the care without hurting your family financially. The range of costs when you start searching will be wide and higher cost will not always mean better care. Be sure when you start looking that you are looking for places in your price range up front in order to avoid disappointment or shock at a later time. Most people will be able to find a good day care in their price range if they take the time to search one out.

This can be a very stressful time for both you as a parent and for your child. Day care providers should understand the anxiety and make every effort to put your mind at ease. Most states have requirements for day care and qualified providers are always the way to go. This is simply an extra safeguard for you and your child. The best advice when weighing alternatives for day care is to do your homework and to go with your gut instinct. No one knows your child like you do and if something is telling you to walk away, you may want to go with that feeling.
