Canada is a huge country that is relatively sparsely populated, which is important to keep in mind for vacation planning. You will not be able to see the whole country in one visit, particularly if you are bringing children.
If you enjoy the outdoors, there are a number of wonderful places to go in the Canadian wilderness, but my favorite has been camping in Ontario's provincial parks. There is the option for camping in a tent, bringing a trailer or other recreational vehicle, or you can often rent a "yurt", which is like a cabin. This is an inexpensive (anywhere from $20 - $50 a night, depending on the location of the park and if you want hydro) getaway and the parks typically offer a number of trails and nature activities.
If you are looking for a city visit, I would suggest looking at Toronto or Montreal. Toronto probably has the largest number of family friendly attractions, including amusement parks and cultural experiences but visiting Montreal is like visiting an entirely different, European country. Montreal is a bilingual city, with both French and English being spoken. The Old City and Waterfront have a number of family friendly activities, and there is a small amusement park there too.
If you are wanting a very short stay, Niagara Falls, Ontario or the Wheels Inn in Chatham, Ontario are fun places to visit. Niagara Falls is very expensive so if you are bringing your family, make sure you budget appropriately for food and attractions. Of course, looking at the Falls is free! The Wheels Inn in Chatham typically has package deals for hotel and the indoor amusements and water park that is there. It has received high marks from the families who have visited for a few days.
Visit Canada, you will find that the people are friendly and polite, you are never too far from the "wilderness", and families are always welcome.
