How to cure insomnia

Pain is stimulating. When we are in pain our bodies become more alert than when we are not in pain. Again, this has had advantages from an evolutionary perspective. If our ancestors were to have remained asleep when they were being clawed by a bear we would not exist today. However, if you have chronic pain issues, it is highly likely that your pain is contributing to your insomnia. Please see a doctor about pain management strategies.

One of the most common physical problems that causes insomnia is heart burn. If acid is coming up from your stomach, through your esophagus and stinging the back of your throat this can also cause enough pain to wake you up. There are a many things you can do for heart burn, and it is best to check with your doctor who can recommend the best line of treatment. There is actually a more serious condition called GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) that you could have if you are experiencing a lot of heart burn. GERD, if not treated, can actually lead to certain types of cancer. So if you are having a lot of issues with heart burn it is important to see your doctor as soon as you can.

There is another common disorder that effects sleep which is called obstructive sleep apnea. In this disorder the person literally stops breathing for a few seconds several times throughout the night during sleep. This prevents the person from getting restful sleep because when breathing stops, our brain becomes deprived of oxygen and our survival instincts kick in and wake us up. Very often people with sleep apnea simply return to sleep several times per night without realizing what is going on. They often sleep late, and are tired throughout the day even though they often spend more hours in bed than normal never reaching the deeper restful stages of sleep. These people often snore.

Another less common condition effecting sleep is restless legs syndrome (RLS). In RLS the person experiences the urge to move his or her legs and often experiences a crawling sensation in the legs below the skin. This is a neurological condition that can now be managed thanks to newer medications. This uncomfortable disorder is also a notorious cause of insomnia.

Another often overlooked issue with sleep is the role that allergies play. Very often the constant nasal drip, itchy eyes, sore throat, and bloating (esp. in food allergies) can cause enough discomfort to cause insomnia at night.

Diet, mineral deficiencies in magnesium, calcium and zinc can also play a role in
