Comic book recommendations for people who don't like comic books

While it escapes me as to why anyone who doesn't like comic books would want to read them, one should know that comics go much further than just heroic tales of Superman and Spider-Man nowadays. There are stories for virtually every reader in a plethora of different worlds, eras, and points of view. It seems that Vertigo, Wildstorm, and more sister companies to DC and Marvel are the ones who produce the atypical stores. I assume the person who doesn't like comic books would be looking for something that is not the typical ho-hum superhero tale. I have to honestly say that as far as comics go, as far as stories go, as far as fiction and imagination can go, this is by far the greatest story you will ever read. I was never really into comics, I read them to pass the time, but never became interested in authors or artists, subject matter or plot. One of my friends had recommended this comic to me when they were still running it, but since he pretty much told me about a new one everyday, I pushed it to the back of my mind and there it stayed for five long years.

Later on, after high school, I discovered my wife also had an affinity for comics, so since we didn't have a child at the time and had an interest to share, we became avid collectors. When we went to our first convention I saw a copy of the first graphic novel (big book of collected issues) for five bucks. Couldn't beat a price like that, so I picked it up. I read the first issue and I will swear to you, when I turned the last page I got up, drove to the neighborhood comic store, and picked up the next two novels. When those were finished I followed suit with the rest until I had acquired the entire nine volume set. This is also the ONLY thing I have ever read more than once, and as I write this article I am now tempted to go back and read it a fourth time.

This story changed me somehow. I pay attention to the authors and their work, and the artists and their styles. Now I view comics as something much more than simple stories to pass the time. They are gateways into imagination, into darkness, into hope, and into whatever else the writer chooses. The drawback to reading this comic,
