I can see how it can be easy to assume that celebrities entering facilities for rehabilitation is a new fashion, but I wonder how true this really is. We are living in an age where we have allot of equipment and technology with which to use for communication purposes. We can send and receive the latest news in a flash. So, when a celebrity enters rehab we all know about it very quickly. The celebrities have no chance of slipping quietly in or out of such establishments unnoticed anymore.
Celebrities from a former generation were not perfect. Some of them had alcohol and drug problems just the same as celebrities have today. The difference is that the celebrities of the past were protected from the media, usually by the film companies that they were working for, as those companies did not want bad publicity. The film companies went to great lengths to hide the celebrities indiscretions, and so their reputations remained untarnished.
Our world today is different. Not only is personal information about the stars broadcast quickly, it is also often exaggerated or false. In the past the opposite was true. We idolized celebrities and thought that they could do no wrong. Today, celebrities are not kept away from us so much, and we are able to see them as real people, with real problems.
There has been another change in society that may have also contributed to more and more celebrities going into rehab. Years ago, stars were not made so much as born. Celebrities these days are often manufactured. They play on their good looks and fashionable appeal, rather than their skills and talents.
Living as a celebrity with such shallow misgivings can lead to insecurity and personal problems for youthful starlets, who are defined, not by their history of good work, but by their hairstyle and ability to get into the news. Many of them turn to drink or drugs as a means of escape.
They can afford to do this because society plows so much money into meaningless light entertainment that is derived from all that is material, such as appearance and popularity. Celebrities not only have emotional angst about who they really are as individuals, but they have endless amounts of cash to splash around. They can afford to take the edge off of their insecurities with substances which provide mind altering states.
Being in rehab may grab the medias attention for a short while, but it rarely gets celebrities a great deal of positive attention unless there is concern about their survival. When it looks as-though someone is on the edge of existence, a media frenzy ensues. However, not even a celebrity who wants to be in the limelight is likely to go this far for the sake of fashion.
