Explaining why children love learning about animals

Watch a toddler chase a puppy or kitten around and you can see how much fun that the child has from this little game of catch me if you can. Little ones just love animals.

If you look at it from the toddler's point of view; what a fun toy a pet can be. Their cuddly and soft and just interesting. They have tails to pull on; fur and faces to grab. And oh how those wet and warm and funny feeling wet kisses feel against their faces. It's even more fun if the pet is a baby too. They become instant playmates. They even share each other's food.

I think that kids like pets because the have a lot in common. They both crawl on the ground; eat off floor; and love to play games. But, I think it is more than just that; kids are also interested in the animals that they see in the world around them.

Maybe it just that the animals represent something new and interesting to learn about. Kids are sensory beings. They learn by sight, touch, smell, sound and taste. Seeing, listening to and perhaps touching new animals gives them a chance to use most of their senses.

Maybe it is something instinctive in all of us. Something related to our ancestry. We needed the animals to survive. They provided our food, our clothing, our means of transportation, and many more things. They also killed us so we needed to be aware of their nature. So maybe being interested in animals is related to our origin.

There could be many reasons that children love to learn about animals. Maybe it is not important to know why. Maybe we should just enjoy the fact that they do.
