Canada offer wonderful opportunities for terrific family vacations. The unspoiled beaches trimmed with red rock and peppered with sandy dunes of Prince Edward Island offer relaxation and a reprieve from the busy life. Miles of dirt roads complete with a parallel biking path compliment the outdoor experience on this tiny and special island.
Prince Edward Island offers traditional seaside towns some complete with horse racing venues. This island can satisy the outdoor lover, history lover, and the lover of an island still representative of a time when simplicity rather than overabundance, which much coastline has resigned itself to, reigns.
Try visiting the National Park where a family can camp along the seashore for under $20/night (depending on the season). Here you will find underpopulated seashore perfect for a family looking for some "down-time" with each other. The ocean water is a pleasant temperature in the summer, as particular currents drive warm water along the shore which makes swimming a healthy option for the family. Bring the bikes for long, scenic rides along back, country roads. No need to worry about your child riding in traffic here. Dunes aplenty offer much bird and other wildlife viewing. Believe it or not, fox afford much observation as the population is healthy here. Geologists will love the red rock which also transforms the color of the soil.
Don't forget to shop in Charlottetown, the economic mecca of Prince Edward Island. This city offers a wonderful variety of foods-from Asian fare to traditional Irish/Scottish dishes-and other cultural experiences. You might find bagpipers blowing a tune on a street corner or Celtic dancers performing on stage. For the bit of gambler in everyone, try your luck at the horse races, also available in Charlottetown (or just outside).
Make sure to take your children to visit the home of Anne of Green Gables where history and literature meet, to create a true "home" feeling of the island. It is here you will experience a bit of how Lucy Maud Montgomery saw and felt the island as it used to be before modern times.
Top off your trip with a vist to some of the island's lighthouses. Fog can be heavy on the island, so plan your visits to the lighthouses on a sunny day so that you might also catch the striking views from some of the best coastline that borders the Atlantic.
Though there are many places in Canada to take a terrific trip, Prince Edward Island will not disappoint, and may even make you thirst for another trip there before you even have the chance to pack your bags for home.
