How to decide when your child has outgrown the car seat

Before you make a decision to allow your child to ride in a vehicle without a car seat, it is important that you find out what the age, height and weight requirements are in your state. Many states have raised the age limit, on children riding in car seats, in recent years, and some may even seem unreasonable. Whether you agree with your state's seat belt laws or not, you must follow them or pat the consequences.

An important thing to keep track of is the weigh requirements for each particular car seat your children sit in, and upgrade the car seats accordingly. For example, most baby carrier type car seats would not be suitable for a 30 pound child. If an individual used an infant carrier type car seat with a 30 pound child, that child is not going to be protected from harm if you should be involved in an accident, and could even put the child at greater risk for injury. Placing a child in a car seat that is not suitable for them is just as dangerous as not putting them in a car seat at all.

Many people feel that the increase in age and size requirements for car seat laws is only due to car seat manufacturers persuading the government that their products are needed for an even longer period of time, thus making them more money off of each child's life. Whether this is true or not, is irrelevant if you want to live a law abiding life, and take every precaution in keeping your children safe.

In closing, find out about your state's car seat laws, and check the height and weight specifications on your car seats before you take a chance on your child's safety.
