Driver safety: What to do when you are the target of road rage

It seems to happen everytime you venture out of the house in a car. You glance in your rear view mirror and notice some one who appears very angry is riding the bumper on your car. While you can't read lips, you can tell that what they are yelling would not be appropriate language for your children.

Does this sound like you? Do you ever wonder what you did to make yourself a target for road rage? Do you ever think you may have brought this upon yourself? The answer is, most likely, yes...yes, you did.

It's easy to avoid the rampages of an angry driver. Here are some tips you may want to follow the next time you drive in order to avoid being the subject of road rage:

1. Always use your blinker. If you are turning, use it. If you are changing lanes, use it. It's not there to look pretty or maintain resale value, your blinker is there to be used. And don't turn it on two feet before your turn or as you are turning, road ragers REALLY hate that.

2. Just because you turn your blinker on does not mean you can just go and people will let you through. Ensure that when you are changing lanes, that another car is not already there. When you are turning, make sure people will not have to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting you. And, do not turn on your blinker and make others play a guessing game on what you will do next.

3. Do not cruise in the left lane, especially on the Interstate. No one cares if you are going the speed limit, the left lane is for passing. People do not want to pass in the right lane as it is unsafe and could cause a very nasty accident. And don't try to be the savior by thinking you are doing good by slowing people down. Road ragers are in a hurry, and they need you to move out of the way.

4. Get off your cell phone! I can't stress this enough and those on their cell phones are the ones most likely to be the subject of road rage. Talking on your phone causes you to drive slower than normal and quit paying attention. It is just not worth it.

Hopefully these few little tips for drivers can help them avoid dealing with anyone with road rage. Remember, these people are normally angry for a reason, they didn't just pick you on that particular day. Wise up and quit driving like an idiot and you may save more lives than you know!
