The rewards of working for a nonprofit organization are numerous. I
remember telling my family that I would get the job at the Salvation Army,
it was something I deeply desired for a long time. Within a few months
I was promoted to Store Manager and I had the opportunity to really help
many in deep need. I was in a position where I could set the prices on
all the merchandise. When destitute individuals came in to buy basic needs,
I could readily change the price to where they could afford the items or
pay for the product myself and just give it to them. When you can assist
others this way, you experience such a natural high that could never be
bought with money. You become an immediate friend and hero to those you
help out. I received hugs, cards and letters from many customers.
We worked along with the government by offering a community service program.
I was an overseer to those who had to work to please the court.
Many of these individuals had hit their rock bottom and by the time they were
sent over, they were seeking a change. I was elated to work with those who made
sincere efforts. It was a learning experience for them as well as myself.
Our store was open to donations all day and I received such joy from the
many individuals who wanted to contribute to the cause. It was inspiring
to know that there are many fine people still in the world.
Although an individual cannot make a living by working for a nonprofit
institution the rewards supersede the monetary gain.
