A college football coach needs to be someone who is crazy about the sport and knows everything about the opposing teams. But the coach also needs to realize that the players are also studying to obtain degrees that may very well dictate the course of their professional lives.
A good coach should be able to spot those bound and determined (and talented) individuals who are NFL-bound after just a few practices, or at least by the first game.
A good coach should not allow personal bias to prevent recruiting any exceptional player for his team. But those exceptional players should not be showcased in any extraordinary way, but they should be placed in a position which allows the players to excel as a team. Spectators will be able to spot talent without the coach having to make it blatantly obvious.
A good coach should also realize that most college football players are going to be a little less focused on their studies than they should be. But the coach shouldn't let that happen. All work and no play may make the players dull boys, but all play and no work makes a rotten individual out of a football player.
A good football coach also needs to be someone who can motivate injured, tired players and keep their minds focused when the clock is running.
A good coach would need to show the players that he can be trusted with the responsibility of calling plays and demonstrating plays so that each player is equally comfortable with his role in the play.
Above all, a good coach needs to have trust and faith in his players, and the team's best interests at heart.
